Viviane Houle

"Houle not only owns the many avant vocal styles on display here, she has something unique — sometimes stunningly brilliant — to bring to each of them."
The Squid's Ear

"Intimate, eerie, electrifying, Treize is a tour de force of vocal improvisation. ...an auspicious debut recording from an attention-riveting artist."
- Exclaim!

"throwing dictionaries out of windows, the sound of a trombone digging up a grave, ripping out everybody's larynx with your bare hands...a genius example of this audacious approach to music...one of the year’s best albums."

- CokeMachineGlow

"Houle warbles and scats like some demented cross between Yma Sumac and Slim Gaillard, but also does the Phil Minton thing of squeezing non-musical grunts and sighs from a closed larynx."
- The Sound Projector

"[Louis Andriessen] was then joined on stage by Vancouver’s powerful and unmatched Viviane Houle. It turns out that she embodies a kind of Kiri Te Kanawa who has swallowed the DNA of Yma Sumac. The heights of Houle’s vocal folds are stratospheric. We get grand opera, French chanteuse, and abstruse, cryptic, and arcane contemporary classic singer capable of anything deeply vocal."
- Vancouver Observer

Check out the festival celebrating composer Louis Andriessen happening in Vancouver April 3-8th.  I'll be there!  David Pay, director of Main on Music has put an incredible line-up of shows together for this event.  On the 7th I'll be doing an improv performance with the amazing Italian vocalist, Cristina Zavalloni and with Louis Andriessen himself!

Lots of other exciting gigs coming up including a show with the Eye of Newt Ensemble on April 18th and then a show in Montreal in May.  Stefan and I will be recording and performance with Montreal's Lori Freedman.  While we're Montreal, Stefan will be working with Pierre Hebert who performed with us here in Vancouver on Valentine's Day.

Also, on the horizon - I have two new CDs almost done!  Both have been mastered.  Now just the artwork and printing.  One is a live show with Stefan Smulovitz at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, 2008.  The other is my duets project with 13 of Vancouver's top improvisers.  This album has a lot of surprises!

 See you soon!
