Viviane Houle

"Houle not only owns the many avant vocal styles on display here, she has something unique — sometimes stunningly brilliant — to bring to each of them."
The Squid's Ear

"Intimate, eerie, electrifying, Treize is a tour de force of vocal improvisation. ...an auspicious debut recording from an attention-riveting artist."
- Exclaim!

"throwing dictionaries out of windows, the sound of a trombone digging up a grave, ripping out everybody's larynx with your bare hands...a genius example of this audacious approach to music...one of the year’s best albums."

- CokeMachineGlow

"Houle warbles and scats like some demented cross between Yma Sumac and Slim Gaillard, but also does the Phil Minton thing of squeezing non-musical grunts and sighs from a closed larynx."
- The Sound Projector

"[Louis Andriessen] was then joined on stage by Vancouver’s powerful and unmatched Viviane Houle. It turns out that she embodies a kind of Kiri Te Kanawa who has swallowed the DNA of Yma Sumac. The heights of Houle’s vocal folds are stratospheric. We get grand opera, French chanteuse, and abstruse, cryptic, and arcane contemporary classic singer capable of anything deeply vocal."
- Vancouver Observer

Home home again
Glad to be back in the creek.  The gigs we had in Victoria BC and Victoriaville, Quebec were both wonderful.  Victoria was Open's Space's Voice ++ Festival and featured works by Kathy Kennedy, Tina Pearson, Christine Duncan, Andrea Young, Cathy Lewis, the marvelous group, Hypatia and my duet with Stefan.  It also featured a wonderful composition by Pauline Oliveros who was present via Skype.  It was a fun group of perfomers - high energy, very warm and supportive.  Same is true for the audiences who came out.

Victoriaville was wild.  Being one of 24 groups selected to perform at FIMAV's 25th anniversary year, was an thrill.  We perform at the old Cinema Theatre and had a great show, enthusiastic audience, and excellent reviews.  Stefan and I stayed for two more days after our show to be able to take in the rest of the festival.  I ended up seeing 11 shows and stefan 13.

Next up is our Cd release on June 9th at the Jazz Cellar.  It's the first duet CD that Stefan and I release.  It's on the NOW Orchestra Records label.  We've asked Barbara Bourget (Kokoro Dance) to join us for this event.  It's a small club with no dance floor so we're excited to see how Barbara, who is an incredible butoh dancer, will use the space and interact with our improvisations.

I'm also getting ready to record a CD on June 15, 16, and 17th at the factory with 13 of Vancouver's best improvisers.  Jesse Zubot is producing and we're focusing on pure improv and some improvised song.  The results will definitely be surprising.  I'm really looking forward to the whole process and getting a chance to play with all these wonderful people and players.

The Vancouver International Jazz Festival follows all this ...

 A bientot,

Victoria and Victoriaville
Last two weeks I was in London and Paris (mostly Paris) for some work with Phil Minton and some holiday time.  Love Paris.  I'd never been there in the spring.  It's a gorgeous city.  Next up is a performance in Victoria, BC at Open Space for the Voice ++ Festival and then a gig at FIMAV in Victoriaville, Quebec (about two hours from Montreal).

Cheers,
Viviane
